1. Introduction

Welcome to the ZCHPC User Manual. This guide will help you navigate Xen Orchestra, manage virtual machines (VMs), and use snapshots effectively. Firstly, you need to apply for an account by visiting https://zchpc.ac.zw/accountapplication

2. Getting Started

2.1 Logging In

To log in to Xen Orchestra, visit https://cloud.zchpc.ac.zw OR uz.zchpc.ac.zw (replace "uz" with your respective university/organisation abbreviation if accessing through your secure campus VPN, e.g. msu.zchpc.ac.zw). Enter your username and password to access your dashboard.

2.2 Navigating the Interface

The dashboard shows an overview of your VMs and system resources. Use the left-hand menu to navigate between sections like Home, VMs, Snapshots, and Storage.

3. Virtual Machine Management

3.1 Creating a New VM

To create a VM, click on the 'Create VM' button, select a template, assign resources, and configure storage. Click 'Create' to start your new VM.

3.2 Starting, Stopping, and Restarting VMs

To start, stop, or restart a VM, select it from the list and use the respective buttons: 'Start', 'Stop', or 'Restart'.

3.3 Accessing VM Consoles

You can access the console of a VM to interact with it directly. Select the VM and click 'Console'.

4.3 Deleting Snapshots

To delete a snapshot, select it from the 'Snapshots' tab and click 'Delete'.

5. Resource Monitoring

5.1 Monitoring VM Performance

You can monitor the performance of your VMs by checking CPU, memory, and network usage in the VM details.

5.2 Viewing Storage Usage

Monitor your storage usage by going to the 'Storage' tab and checking how much disk space your VMs are using.

6. Best Practices

6.1 Managing VM Performance

Ensure you allocate only the necessary CPU and memory to avoid performance issues. Regularly monitor and adjust resources as needed.

6.2 Regular Snapshots

Take regular snapshots of your VMs, especially before making significant changes.

7. Troubleshooting

7.1 Common Issues

If a VM isn't starting, check resource allocation and contact your system administrator if the issue persists.
